War & Drobe garments are proudly handcrafted in London by founder and creator of the label Nina Kovacevic. As a child Nina came to London fleeing the war from former Yugoslavia. It was during this time that her mother taught her the power of fashion and the strength it can bring. The label was named and born out of a love for empowering women through fashion and allowing them to feel fierce and feminine in their day to day lives.

“I grew up with my mother telling me stories about her experiences during the war. She worked as a pharmacist and although there were daily shootings and bombing she would still go to work every day. She’d tell me how she made an extra effort to dress well during this time because it was her way of showing resilience and maintaining a sense of pride and dignity. I often remember seeing her wearing her red Dior lipstick and vintage furs, she was a real head turner.”

Having studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, Nina went on to develop her skills training under a tailor, couturier and working in a lingerie studio. She collates her past experiences, technical knowledge and creative background to bring to life collections with a purpose. By slowing down the making process and never mass producing clothing, War & Drobe celebrates and preserves traditional artisanal sewing techniques. Crafting clothing consciously is at the heart of the label, starting with a simple sketch that’s lovingly and laboriously developed by one person alone.

War & Drobe was born from a personal story of defiance and like most women know, we can be strong as well as feminine. As women we are bonded by our need to be resilient in a world that has often labelled us as fragile. The romanticism of being a woman is in itself empowering and this is what inspires War & Drobe collections. The contrasting yet complementary attributes of being feminine and fierce are what drives War & Drobe to create garments that are an extension of who we are as women. The label embraces all that it is to be a woman and expresses this through the elegant yet contemporary style.

The War & Drobe ethos is to always look at the full life cycle of a garment and what impact it leaves. Each piece is created so that woman can fall in love with it and designed to stand the test of time both in style and durability. Behind the brand is a passion for making clothing that is valued like an heirloom and a throwback to a time when woman passed them down to future generations. Fabrics are carefully selected from local suppliers as well as high end designer surplus from Italy and organic cottons from farther afield. Even the swing tags are printed onto recycled card and all other packaging is either recyclable or biodegradable. Time is taken to create garments with a meaningful purpose as well as a striking style and exceptional fit.
